ESLint

Last updated: Oct 28, 2026

Rationale

Fluid Attacks uses ESLint as the primary static linter for TypeScript source code.

  • It is not a new TypeScript linter. Thus, it has many rules, and they are fully tested.
  • It is open source.
  • It has a very large number of typing checks.
  • It supports caching of reviewed files, for performance.
  • It has a language server by default, which makes the development experience much better.
  • It integrates in-editor typing with its VS Code extension for the development experience.
  • Because it is built in JavaScript, it has serious performance limitations.

Alternatives

At this time, Fluid Attacks examines these alternatives as possible replacements for ESLint:

Biome

  • Biome is a static linter and formatter. Thus, it can replace ESLint and also formatting tools like Prettier.
  • It is open source.
  • It does not have as many typing checks as ESLint, but its number of checks increases very fast.
  • It does not support caching at this time, but it is much faster than ESLint.
  • It has a language server by default, which makes the development experience much better.
  • It integrates in-editor typing with its VS Code extension for the development experience.
  • Because it is built in Rust, it is much faster than other linters and formatters. Thus, the performance problem of ESLint does not occur with Biome.

Oxc

  • Oxc is a static linter. It does not support formatting at this time.
Thus, the performance problem of ESLint does not occur with Oxc.

Usage

Fluid Attacks uses ESLint to enforce strict code quality on all its TypeScript source code.
