OpenSearch

Last updated: Nov 4, 2026

Rationale

OpenSearch is an open-source search engine that is a fork of ElasticSearch. Amazon made it because of some licensing problems that it had with Elastic, the original developers.

  • AWS and a community of developers maintain it.
  • It does full-text search on indexed data with a flexible API.
  • It is SaaS-oriented. Thus, Fluid Attacks does not manage its infrastructure.
  • It supports local deployments. Thus, Fluid Attacks can run it on its machines. This is very useful for development and ephemeral environments.
  • Fluid Attacks can write all its settings as code with Terraform.

Alternatives

  • ElasticSearch (on AWS): Fluid Attacks does not recommend it, because the last supported version before the license change is 7.10, which is old at this time.
  • ElasticSearch (on Elastic Cloud): Fluid Attacks would have to use a different cloud provider with its own pricing model, for only a few features that OpenSearch does not have.

Usage

Fluid Attacks uses OpenSearch for the search and filtering features of the Fluid Attacks platform.
